Malt algorithm: how freelancers are ranked

Relevance, profile quality, responsiveness, availability, reviews: the signals that count in Malt's search results, and how to act on each one.

When a client looks for a freelancer on Malt, hundreds of profiles can match. Malt sorts them, and most clients only look at the first results. Understanding this ranking means knowing where to put your energy.

Malt doesn't publish the details of its algorithm. What follows covers the signals highlighted by Malt and observed by freelancers. They're trends, not an exact formula.

This is the foundation. The client types a few words, and Malt looks for them in your profile: your title, skills, description and experience.

The more a keyword comes back across these parts, the more Malt understands you're relevant for that search. It's the same principle as ranking a website on Google.

To do

Pick 2 or 3 main keywords, the ones your clients type, and make them appear in your title, key skills, description and several experiences.

Profile quality and completeness

A complete profile sends more signals to the algorithm and reassures clients more. Photo, title, detailed description, around thirty skills, described experience, portfolio: every empty field is one less signal.

Responsiveness

Your response time and rate to new messages count. Clients often contact several freelancers at once: the first to reply gets the edge, and Malt rewards responsive profiles.

Availability

Recently confirmed availability shows you're active on the platform. Remember to confirm it regularly, even when nothing changed.

Reviews and recommendations

Reviews left after a Malt project reassure clients and count in the ranking. Recommendations, which you can ask past clients for even outside Malt, weigh a bit less but help too, especially when starting out.

Where to start

  1. Your title, with your job and main keywords.
  2. Your 5 key skills, aligned with your title.
  3. Your description, naturally repeating these keywords.
  4. Your responsiveness and availability, day to day.

To check all this in one click on your profile, the OptiMalt checklist reviews the 10 points that matter and tells you what to fix.
